About Us

Green Earth Development is where Matt and Carys bring together their complimentary skills from the building and engineering worlds. They live with their two daughters is an off-grid home built by Matt in a beautiful piece of paradise near Ōtaki on the Kāpiti Coast.

Carys is an experienced civil and environmental engineer, with a passion for international community development and sustainable living.

Working for over 20 years in the consulting engineering sector, Carys has in-depth technical expertise in waste management, water and wastewater engineering, including contract management and providing technical advice and support. Carys has led teams of people on complex infrastructure projects, and have a wide range of stakeholder liaison, project management and communication skills.

Working with incredible organisations and people in the community development sector, Carys has skills in organisational development, partnership management, strategic leadership, monitoring and evaluation, and programme management.

Wearing many hats, Matt bounces between community development projects, sustainable building, emergency compost toilets and general project management.

Over the years Matt has travelled and worked in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Tonga. He has managed projects related to community resilience and tsunami recovery and provided advice and mentoring for water and sanitation projects.

Matt takes a keen interest in bringing the benefits of composting toilets to the mainstream. He worked with the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University to undertake research on the use of composting toilets in emergencies. He has worked with Civil Defence Wellington to bring compost toilets to the attention of local authorities as a preferred emergency response solution.

Our Services

Community Development

Carys and Matt are both experienced in the international / community development sector, in particular Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), stakeholder engagement, partnerships and organisational development.

Eco Building

Matt is a Licensed Building Practitioner with specific skills and experience in eco building, he enjoys working with recycled materials, earth building and timber work.

On-site Wastewater

Carys is a Professional Engineer and can work with you to design and prepare consent applications for on-site wastewater treatment and grey water disposal systems.

Composting Toilets

Matt can work with you to design, prepare consent applications and build composting toilets for both permanent and temporary situations. He can lead you through a process to integrate Emergency Compost Toilets (ECT) into your organisation’s emergency plan and provide staff training on the use and management of the emergency toilet system.
